The Sicilian Timeline

Three thousand years of history, arranged along a single horizontal scroll.

Every civilization that ruled Sicily left its mark; some left behind grand monuments and lasting cultural achievements, others left just scars. The Greeks built temples still standing today. The Arabs brought sugar cane, citrus, and a thousand-year agricultural revolution. The Normans built Europe’s most prosperous and tolerant kingdom. The Spanish are remembered for inflicting centuries of religious persecution and torture by the inquisition, for financial exploitation by the monarchy and noble classes, and an ever-shrinking economy. Each era in this timeline is a chapter in the continuous story of a proud Sicilian people. Scroll right to move forward through time. Click any event marker to open a detailed panel.
